No Suitability Determination

Southwest Water Innovations LLC makes no determination of suitability of any of these chemicals for your unique pre-treatment use case. We warranty only that the chemicals are what the package says they are.

This is a tool kit to help drop sediment out of solution. It is not a water purifier.

This product was created to bring the tools of municipal water treatment to the general public, to encourage safe water use and re-use. There are no other products we are aware of that help convert the water you have into something you can use, even if not for drinking.

Chemical Sourcing & Testing

We rely on a large chemical supplier in China, who has been in business for decades, that the appropriate product testing was done. That being said, here is what we've been told about each chemical's certification status:

Officially qualified for potable water use

  • Polyaluminum Chloride (PAC)

Suitable for water treatment processes (without official drinking-water-grade certification)

  • Poly Ferric Sulfate (PFS)
  • Anionic Polyacrylamide (APAM)
  • Non-ionic Polyacrylamide (NPAM)
  • Cationic Polyacrylamide (CPAM)

We have also been told that Sodium Carbonate, Citric Acid, and Bentonite Clay are safe for use in drinking water processing. For context: Citric Acid is a food product, though you should not eat it directly. Sodium Carbonate is washing soda — baking soda that's been baked further. Bentonite Clay is just clay, often used in cosmetics.

CPAM falls into the second category above — it is not officially certified for drinking water, and separately, it is not recommended for water you plan to drink at all. See Which PAM and the dosing instructions for why.

Using Non-Certified Chemicals for Drinking Water

Products that do not have official drinking-water certification may still be used for drinking water preparation, but they will require extra processing. For example, sewage treated with PFS or PAM that is post-treated with reverse osmosis, or consumed through a membrane straw, can still be used for drinking. CPAM molecules are large and do not pass through ultrafiltration filters, so that post-treatment step addresses the CPAM concern as well.

PFS can leave a tint that may be undesirable for some applications — you should prefer PAC for drinking water preparation. PFS still works, and it's included in our lineup because it may be a better fit for your particular application.

We accept no responsibility for use or misuse of these products, and our financial liability shall not exceed the cost of the kit. You are responsible for ensuring that what you mix is safe for your use case.

We also hold our chemical suppliers harmless. They performed the relevant batch testing before shipping and did not supervise the packaging.
